BIOGRAPHY INVENTOR
Karl Freiherr von Drais (born in Karlsruhe, 29 April 1785 - died in Karlsruhe, 10 December 1851 at the age of 66) was a noble German forest official and a significant inventor of the Biedermeier period.
Drais was a prolific inventor, who invented the Laufmaschine ("running machine") also later called the velocipede, draisine (English) or draisienne (French), also known as the hobby horse or dandy horse.
This is his most famous and widely recognized invention. It incorporated the two-wheeler principle that underpinned bicycles and motorbikes and was the beginning of mechanized personal transportation. This was the earliest form of bicycle, without pedals. The reported trip from Mannheim to "Schwetzinger Relaishaus" (training inn, located in "Rheinau", today a district of Mannheim) took place on 12 June 1817 using the best street Baden.
Karl's death on his bike, the distance is about 7 kilometers (4.3 mi). The round trip is a little over an hour, but can be seen as a big blast for horseless transport.
