Karl Freiherr von Drais (born in Karlsruhe, 29 April 1785 - died in Karlsruhe, 10 December 1851 at the age of 66) was a noble German forest official and a significant inventor of the Biedermeier period. Drais was a prolific inventor, who invented the Laufmaschine ("running machine") also later called the velocipede, draisine (English) or draisienne (French), also known as the hobby horse or dandy horse.  This is his most famous and widely recognized invention. It incorporated the two-wheeler principle that underpinned bicycles and motorbikes and was the beginning of mechanized personal transportation. This was the earliest form of bicycle, without pedals.
